TITLE: |
Letter from Ernest Augustus Belford, clerk, stamp office, Dublin, seeking advance of pension aid for his 4 sisters |
SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letter from Ernest Augustus Belford, clerk, stamp office, Dublin, to Lieutenant Colonel Meyrick Shawe, private secretary to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, drawing attention to the plight of his father and in particular to the financial burden caused by maintenance of his 4 daughters, and seeking assistance for them. Emphasises the acute difficulty of his father’s case, whose suffering over the past couple of years has been compounded by the ‘long suspension of his pay’. Encloses memorial from his father Lieutenant Colonel William Belford, formerly of the 3rd royal veteran battalion, to Wellesley, seeking inclusion of his daughters on a pension list for receipt of financial aid. Stresses his personal service in a military capacity for 44 years, and that of his father, General Belford of the 1st battalion of royal artillery, who took part in campaigns in Germany, Culloden [Scotland], and in Woolwich [England], during the Gordon Riots of 1780. Complains he finds himself encumbered with responsibility for the future support of his immediate female family, which he cannot manage on his half pay salary. |
