Letter from [George Canning, 1st Baron] Garvagh, [Lord Lieutenant of County Londonderry], Garvagh, [County Londonderry or Derry], to Sir William Gosset, [Under Secretary], disagreeing with the proposal of government to remove the 47th Regiment which is currently stationed at Magherafelt; drawing attention to the dangers of not having any soldiers stationed within a two day march of his area and warning that the south eastern part of the county is by no means in a comfortable state. Also letter from Rowley Miller, Moneymore, [County Londonderry], to Gosset, noting that resistance to tithes and rents is increasing in his area; observing for example that Mr McReynolds, Seneschal of [Clane] Manor Court, [County Tyrone] recently could not get a jury to try a tithe case and noting the release of men belonging to the Tobermore Estate who were committed for assault against himself and his son; seeking to have the military stationed at Tobermore to enforce tithes in that parish and the adjoining Ballynascreen parish. Also letter from [Arthur Chichester, 1st Baron] Templemore, Military Secretary, Royal Hospital, [Dublin], to Gosset, returning letters forwarded to him and noting that a detachment of the 61st Regiment are to be stationed in Magherafelt. Memorial of 20 inhabitants of Sixmilebridge, [County Clare], to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, noting that £80 was advanced to their area by the London Tavern Committee in 1822; claiming that the advance of money was charity and observing that Col William O’Brien, Seneschal, who was appointed to distribute the money is now demanding repayment. Also letter from O’Brien, Sixmilebridge, [probably to Sir William Gosset, [Under Secretary], claiming that following the conclusion of the immediate distress in 1822 he managed the funds of the Loan Fund Association in the town, using it to loan small sums of money to tradespeople; observing that the Ennis Loan Committee have called in a loan of £100 advanced to the Association which has resulted in the demands for repayment from weavers and other tradesmen.
