Letter from [Maj] BB Woodward, [Inspector of Prisons], 41 Leeson Street, [Dublin], to William Lamb, Chief Secretary, referring to enclosed memorial of a Justice of the Peace of County Cork and the Seneschal of the Manor of Charleville, Andrew Batwell, Cork, to [Richard] Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, requesting that the prison in his jurisdiction be allowed to continue as before, following a recent act of parliament meaning that ‘all prisons belonging to Courts of local or inferior jurisdiction are abolished’. Woodward states that this prison has traditionally been used as both a manor prison and as a county bridewell, ‘for either of which purposes it is wholly unfit’, but that if the lord of the manor was prepared to forfeit the expense, he has no objection to the continuation of the prison as a manor prison. |
