Letter from Henry Townsend, secretary, Irish Fishery Office, Lower Gardiner street, Dublin, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, reporting that as yet they cannot offer a full evaluation of proposals for piers on the western coast of Ireland because ‘their Engineer has not as yet surveyed the entire of the Western Coasts’; also refers to suggestion for development of harbour facilities at Tarbert, County Kerry; returns letter from Richard Griffith, mining engineer, Cork, County Cork, to Gregory, reporting that the harbour at Tarbert ‘is of great importance as giving a direct vent for the agricultural produce of a large portion of the Counties of Limerick and Kerry’; proposes that the harbour might serve both larger vessels and fishing boats and ‘it would be advisable to increase the scale of the intended Pier so as to make it subservient to both purposes’.
