TITLE: |
File of documents regarding the demotion of Constable Adams, Ballyneen, County Cork, for disobeying orders of his superior Chief Constable M Fitzpatrick, and attempts by magistrates to have the demotion reneged |
SCOPE & CONTENT: |
File of documents regarding the demotion of Constable Adams, Ballyneen, County Cork, for disobeying orders of his superior Chief Constable M Fitzpatrick, and attempts by magistrates to have the demotion reneged. Includes letters from six magistrates, Ballyneen petty sessions, to William Gregory, [Under Secretary, Dublin Castle],explaining that when Adams did not follow orders to arrest sub-constable Coffee, newly dismissed, for not giving up his clothing, he acted on the advice of Mr Connor, [magistrate]; letter from Maj William Miller [Inspector General], Fermoy, [County Cork] and damp press copy reply from Gregory with Miller defending his decision to demote Adams, and letter from Fitzpatrick, Dunmanway, [County Cork], showing how Adams disobeyed his orders. Also mentioning Mr Meade, [magistrate]. Further, containing copy letter from William Gregory, [Under Secretary, Dublin Castle] to the magistrates at Ballyneen, mistakenly identifying the now demoted sub-constable Adams with another sub-constable Adams, Kildorrery, [County Cork], who had been dismissed for drunkenness. An annotation by Richard W Greene, [legal advisor, Dublin] appears to conflate the two cases. |

TITLE: |
File of documents concerning an enquiry into the professional fitness of Abraham Jagoe, magistrate of Kinrath in County Cork |
SCOPE & CONTENT: |
File of documents concerning an enquiry into the professional fitness of Abraham Jagoe, magistrate of Kinrath in County Cork. Includes letter from Daniel Conner, magistrate, Manch House, Dunmanway, County Cork, to Edward Geoffrey Smith Stanley, Chief Secretary, expressing his disapproval of two local magistrates, Abraham Jagoe and Rev Richard Townsend, neither of whom he thinks should be continued in office; directing his condemnation in particular at Jagoe whom he accuses of being of insufficient status to hold the office and is open to bribery and corruption; concluding that Townsend must be also deemed unfit as he took the benefit of the Insolvency Act and is ‘silenced as a clergyman’. Also includes letter from Maj William Miller, [Inspector General of Police in Munster], Fermoy, [County Cork], to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, reporting on the character of Jagoe, a man whose reputation is ‘notorious’ in the area he lives and dishonourable; observing that a review of magistrates is necessary in order to uproot those who are unsuited to holding such a distinction. |
