Two letters from Maj Samson Carter, stipendiary magistrate [police], Thurles, [County Tipperary], to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, offering some remarks on the background to an upcoming election contest; stating that [Daniel] O’Connell departed on account of the machinations of the Independent party and noting that [Francis Aldborough] Prittie has resigned and [Thomas] Wyse may not come to the hustings; observing that O’Connell carriage was damaged by some of the peasantry vying ‘for the honour of Drawing him into town’; also reporting on an attack on Henry Langley, magistrate, while returning from the election; stating he was fired at by an unknown party about three miles outside Cashel and was robbed of personal possessions. |
