Letter from Frederick Darley, John Graves and Major Henry Charles Sirr, chief magistrates, Head Office of Police, Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, reporting on investigation of case of Patrick Healy, who complains by memorial of being arrested due to a warrant of magistrate ‘Haig’: reveals that on foot of allegations made by John Delapoer, Healy was detained by a police constable and his home searched where it was discovered ‘in his Memorandum, or shop book, a correct copy of the passwords of the “Ribbonmen” for the then current quarter, which in our view of the case, went far to identify him with that body’; encloses copy letter from Robert Sandys, Dargle Cottage, County Wicklow, to Charles Tod, Head Office of Police, Dublin, stating he dispatched a peace officer to apprehend Healy, following which a case was taken against him for being part of ‘a combination to murder’, of which he was acquitted; also encloses memorial from Healy, leather breeches maker, Bray, County Wicklow, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, seeking compensation for loss of business and legal costs amounting to a sum of £27.9.8, expended in defense of allegations raised by past employee, Delapoer, a man whom he describes as being ‘deranged in his mind’; also encloses statement by John Power, pensioner and leather breeches maker, Newtownbarry, County Wexford, alleging that Healy and Bryan Byrne exerted pressure on him to participate in a conspiracy to murder ‘two Tyrants’, Lord Meath [John Chambre Brebazon] and Lord Powerscourt [Richard Wingfield].

Petition of James Moody, 23 South King Street, Dublin, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, complaining of the conduct of Robert Sandys, magistrate, whom he states committed him to Wicklow Gaol ‘for the smallest alledged [sic] offence’ and failed to render him fair justice; also claims to have served in the yeomanry of Bray, County Wicklow, and was employed as chief butler to the Archbishop of Dublin and other noblemen. SCOPE & CONTENT:

Petition of Maria Jackson, widow, 1 Carter’s Lane, off Smithfield, Dublin, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, lamenting at being ‘in a famishing state’ and seeking a measure of financial relief. Emphasises her loyalty and the service of the Sandys family and complains of living ‘in a wretched Garret on a poor bit of Straw bereft of health, of food, in fact of every Earthly consolation’; reveals she ‘lost two Brothers in actual Service’, one of whom, Sergeant Simon Sandys of the Royal Longford militia, was killed on 21 June 1798 in an affray with ‘the Irish Rebbels [sic] at Vinegar Hill’; also claims that the Chief Secretary’s Lodge in Phoenix Park, Dublin, was built by her brother Major William Sandys, who was also appointed park ranger.
