Letter from Donough O’Brien, secretary, Office of Public Accounts, Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, enclosing memorial from the commissioners of Public Accounts to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, drawing attention to the insufficiency of salaries paid to clerks of the Office of Public Accounts. Emphasises the special skills and experience needed to work in the department, encompassing such faculties as accounting, mathematics, legal knowledge and cost assessment. Annexes overleaf a tabular form incorporating information on rank [name not given], amount of current salary, length of time in office, and under the heading ‘Submitted Augmentation’, they suggests additional remuneration. Signed by Maurice Cane and Richard Magenis, commissioners of public accounts. Also memorandum stating that salaries under the act of 52nd of George III, chapter 52, are paid out of the Consolidation Fund [prepared for information of the Chief Secretary’s Office]. Petition of Michael Quinn, Clones Post Office, County Monaghan, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, drawing attention to circumstances under which his son John Quinn is incarceration in the gaol of Monaghan. Relates his son and Michael Murphy were improperly accused of stealing £4 4s from William Devine while on the premises of James Dalton, publican of Clones, on 15 August 1825. Claims his son and Murphy succeeded in casting doubt on the credibility of Devine’s case and secured support for a second court hearing; but despite this the sergeant of police took their bail and put them in jail. Seeks redress and intervention of government with local magistrate, JK Jameson.

Also copy letter from Gregory to Gilbert, enclosing a transcription of 3 letters from Prior, 110 Abbey Street, Dublin, complaining of ‘undue influence’ over selection of the supplier of provisions to the convicts on board the ‘Essex’.

Letter from Lieutenant Colonel George Morris, governor, House of Industry, Dublin, to Alexander Mangin, clerk, Civil Department, Dublin Castle, requesting an order from the Chief Secretary to confirm use of accommodation for paupers who are residents of the city and county of Dublin, as stated by particular acts of Parliament. Also makes reference to provision in the House of Industry for ‘incurable idiots’ and notes a reservation at the institution for Mary Griffin, a mentally ill patient at the jail of Kilmainham in County Dublin. Encloses printed copy of the ‘General Report of the House of Industry, Dublin’ with outline of the functions of the various departments of the institution; provides data on the number of patients admitted and discharged, deaths [5 April 1823 to 5 July 1824], number of beds in use, types of employment and diet. Remarks that inmates of the asylum who engage in regular labour ‘receive, as a reward, a weekly allowance of snuff and tobacco’. Also encloses blank copy of the ‘Form of Certificate to be produced by every Pauper who applies for admission into the Pauper Establishment, House of Industry’.

Petition of Nathaniel Prestidge [also spelt Prestage], 6 Basin Lane, Dublin, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting appointment as successor to the situation of inspector of fountains in the liberties of the city of Dublin, presently held by James Pride, who is now in an ‘Irrecoverable state of health’. Remarks he held the privileges of freeman in the town of Trim, County Meath, where he formerly lived, and also holds that distinction in the city of Dublin. Also observes he is married to John Shore’s daughter who is an ‘old tenant’ of the Lord Lieutenant. Also identical later version of the same memorial.

Letter from John Reily, [book keeper to the paving commissioners], Fairview Avenue, Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, requesting appointment to the situation of inspector of fountains in the liberties, following the death of the occupant, James Pride. Observes another applicant, a man of ‘inferior station’ has sought the post, but claims he could not compete with his own ‘official rank, Length of Service, and respectability of character’. Also letter from Reily to Goulburn, expressing interest in the post of supervisor of works under the commissioners for paving, cleaning and lighting the streets of Dublin, which he notes will become available ‘should it be the pleasure of Government to remove the present possessor [George Taylor]’.
