File of material relating to negotiations and objections surrounding the proposed new police station at Arran Quay, Dublin. Includes copy letter from James Price, Dublin, to the magistrates of the 2nd divisional office of police, Dublin, offering his property at 20 Arran Quay for use as a police office. States he holds a lease of the property of 19½ years and expresses willingness to let it for £90 per annum, with earliest date of possession being the 1st May, 16 February 1825. Also includes letter from Frederick Darley, architect [and chief magistrate of police], William Street, Dublin, to the magistrates of the head office of police, conveying approval of the premises at Arran Quay as suitable for use as barracks for the 2nd police division, 2 March 1825. Also includes letter from Joseph Abbott, solicitor, 104 Capel Street, Dublin, to Charles Tod, secretary, head office of police, warning if the contract made for Price’s property at Arran Quay is not ‘immediately carried into execution’ legal proceedings shall be entered into to protect the owner from loss, 24 May 1825. Also includes memorial from the inhabitants of Arran Quay to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, complaining of a likely disruption to their trade, family life, access and interests should the proposed conveyance to the police of Arran Quay go ahead. Points to inconsistency in Darley’s behaviour and requests intervention by government to prevent acquisition of the house in question by the police. Signed by Mathew Brett and 13 others, 8 June 1825. Also includes report from Darley, Peter Low and Major Henry Charles Sirr, chief magistrates, Head Office of Police, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, outlining the sequence of events that surrounded their intended purchase of the premises at Arran Quay. Offers reassurance that this building is the best and cheapest on offer. Also states the presence of the police there will not be an encumbrance to professional people in the neighbourhood, 10 June 1825.

Encloses letter from Francis Johnston, architect and inspector of civil buildings, Architect's Office, Dublin Castle, commending the plans, specification and estimate for the bridewell at Antrim as ‘a secure and convenient one for the purpose intended’, 11 March 1825. Also encloses letter from Major James Palmer, inspector generals of prisons, 41 Leeson Street, Dublin, giving his endorsement to the planned jail, 5 March 1825. Indicates as heir and former manager to an estate in County Galway, Burke’s defence of family interests in the court of equity will be vital. Notes his mother, Mrs Cath[erine] Burke, of Stow [?Stowlin], County Galway, on account of her advanced years, is unable to provide the information required for a defence.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Baron James McClelland, Irish circuit judge, Omagh, County Tyrone, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, requesting issue of order by government to limit prosecutions for illicit distillation at the assizes of Lifford, County Donegal. Continues that the number expected to be brought before the court will be between 200 and 300 persons, and cautions in its present state of completeness the county gaol will be unable to accommodate those convicted. Indicates a similar order by government was granted at the Spring assizes of Donegal last year to his colleague, Thomas Burton Vandeleur. Annotation on reverse from CSO orders that permission be granted to limit prosecutions in Donegal.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Petition of Reverend John Hardy, Church of Ireland clergyman, Glebe House, Kilcullen, County Kildare, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, seeking permission to continue to receive the vicarial income from the curacy of Davidstown, County Kildare, which he holds in union with that of Kilcullen. Refers to an ecclesiastical arrangement of 30 years standing in which the present practice received the sanction of the chancellor of Christ Church, Dublin, and the primate of all Ireland. Annotation on reverse from Wellesley stating he is not opposed to the request but indicates he wishes to take the opinions of the Archbishop of Dublin [William Magee] and the primate of all Ireland. Also dublicate copy of petition from Hardy to Wellesley. Also letter from Archbishop of Armagh [John George Beresford], County Armagh, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, expressing opinion in favour of Hardy’s application. Remarks he offered his initial support ‘for the purpose of securing the residence of a Clergyman in the important union of Kilcullen and Davidstown’.

Letter from John Cummins, seal keeper and registrar of attorneys licences, Court of Common Pleas, Dublin, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, enclosing a memorial to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, seeking payment of remuneration for labour in connection with completion of returns of writs arising from civil actions in the Court of Common Pleas in the years 1816 and 1822. Indicates the returns were prepared for use of the commissioners of inquiry appointed to investigate into the duties, salaries, and emoluments of the offices of the courts of justice in Ireland. Complains that despite making application to the judges of the court and to the board of inquiry, no compensation for his work was paid.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Robert Edward King, 1st viscount Lorton, Carnroe [Carrowroe], County Roscommon, to the Chief Secretary’s Office, Dublin Castle, expressing dissatisfaction over the state of the Elphin road, which he observed on route to the assizes of Roscommon town. Laments that despite earlier representations on the slow progress of the road the engineer supervising public works in the area, Alexander Nimmo ‘has permitted it to remain in the same scandalous & dangerous state’ as before. Regrets that such circumstances impedes those whose livelihood depends on transport and remarks on the dearth of employment for the labouring classes. Adds in postscript that an undertaking was made to have the line completed by last October, it having been commenced back in mid 1822. Also slip of paper with annotation in pencil warning ‘take care not to read Lord Lorton’s Letter’.
