Petition of Thomas Fox, late sergeant, Londonderry militia, 207 Bogside, Londonderry, County Londonderry, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, seeking appointment to a situation in the police establishment of Ireland. Claims to have served for 5 years in the 35th regiment of foot in the early years of the nineteenth century and continued in a military capacity with the Londonderry militia, between 1804 and 1823. Also additional memorial from Fox to Wellesley, acknowledging reply to earlier petition but indicating his application, by post and in person, to Major Thomas D’Arcy, Belfast, County Antrim, inspector general of police for province of Ulster, has not met with a positive response. Reiterates his loyalty to the crown through an army career that spanned 20 years, and complain of being in ‘extreme distress’.

Also letter from Gallagher to John C Erck, chief clerk of Irish Record Commission [and editor of 'Irish Ecclesiastical Register'], Record Tower, Lower Castle Yard, Dublin Castle, requesting a reference for time spent as employee at the Record Tower, with commendation on base for Gallagher signed by Erck. Annotation on reverse of petition from CSO states the unlikelihood of his memorial meeting with a positive response on account of the numbers seeking such employment.

Claims to have spent 12 years of his life in the local yeomanry corps and following that acted as police sub constable in the barony of Bere [Bear], County Cork, for a period of 14 years. Declares while acting in the constabulary, his dwelling house doubled as a place of confinement for outlaws on account of their being no regular prison in Berehaven, though he received no remuneration for his trouble. Attestation of accuracy of statement certified overleaf by Morty O’Sullivan, magistrate.

Letter from Major Thomas Powell, Corkagh, Rathcoole, County Dublin, inspector general of the Leinster constabulary, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, enclosing letter from William Henderson, Dublin, chief constable of King's County [County Offaly], observing as barracks are provided for use of the police of the county, an application for payment of lodging allowance from John Cully, late police sub constable, cannot be entertained. Remarks that Cully’s conduct fell far short of the desired level and was often absent from duty on account of his carrying on a trade. Also letter from Cully, Birr, King's County to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, drawing attention to his outstanding claim to expenses for lodging over a period of two years. Explains following his recent retirement from the constabulary, he sought the arrears amounting to £7 16s by postal application from Powell, but without success.

Alludes to his professional competence and regrets loss of health that prevented his continuance as principle of the classical school in the town of Dingle, County Kerry. Having been incapacitated by an ailment and failing to respond to medical treatment, after 5 years teaching in Dingle, another master took his place. Complains that being without an income for 3 years, he was unable to offer support to his mother [who subsequently died] or his sisters.
