Advises that the convicts be sent by sea rather than overland, citing the disturbed state of the country through which they must pass and the lack of jail accommodation at stops enroute.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Reverend John Murphy, 17 Digges Street, Dublin, rector of union of Kiltallagh, County Mayo, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, concerning the distress of the Church of Ireland clergy in the south west of Ireland, particularly in the dioceses of Ardfert. Emphasises the depression in tithes and the inability of many clergy to meet the premiums on their insurance policies - '…a Provision for their Families in the Event of that fatal occurrence….to which, in the present Disposition of their infatuated Countrymen, their order appears to be more especially exposed'. Requests a government loan to the clergy to pay their premiums due to the Royal Exchange Company, London.

Printed pamphlet by Dr John Browne recommending better regulation of Irish packet ships

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from John Browne, 34 Clarendon Street, Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, 9 June 1823, enclosing copy of a printed pamphlet entitled, 'A Letter to Sir Robert Shaw, Bart. MP, requesting him as senior member for the City of Dublin, to bring in a bill into parliament for the regulation of the Irish Packets, and the better preserving the lives of passengers; with Sir Robert Shaw's Answer; suggested by the late melancholy loss of the Alert packet', by Dr John Browne, Dublin, 1823: Browne's original letter to Shaw is dated 31 March 1823, and details his concerns over the safety of passengers travelling on the packets between Ireland and England, in particular, the lack of any legislative regulation, 'that makes the Proprietors responsible, for the bad effects, arising from the carelessness and improper conduct of their servants'. Refers to the recent loss of the 'Alert' and the 'Moira' packet ships, and the drowning of passengers, the latter case attributed to drunkenness amongst its crew members. Also emphasises need for a restriction on the number of passengers carried, and other safety improvements onboard.
