Letter from Thaddeus O'Dowda, O'Dowda's Town [Bonneconlan], Ballina, County Mayo, to Captain Johnson, Dublin Castle, [probably intended for Edward I Johnston, private secretary to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle], referring to his former application for aid for relief of poor in parish of Kilgarvan, by provision of employment in a public works scheme to improve the direct road from Ballina, County Mayo, to Sligo, Boyle, and Dublin. Reports a recent inspection of the road by Alexander Nimmo, government's civil engineer, and expresses hopes that money will be granted for the work.

Letter from William Smith, Irishtown, Clonmel, County Tipperary, to 'Secretary at War, War Office, Dublin Castle', [probably intended for William Gregory, originally civil under secretary, who assumed the military under secretaryship in 1819, when the two roles were amalgamated], 7 June 1823, enclosing a letter [requesting police employment] [letter not present; presumably forwarded, as requested]. Also letter from William Smith, Maylor Street, Cork city, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, requesting appointment to post of custom house store keeper in Cork, 17 December 1823; with subsequent annotation by Goulburn. [It is possible that these William Smiths are not the same person, but 2 separate individuals of the same name, whose cases were mistakenly filed together as one by CSO clerk during registration of the papers].

SCOPE & CONTENT:

File of papers relating to government purchase of plot of land on Bonham Street, Dublin, adjacent to the Four Courts Marshalsea, and in particular, the investigation of ownership rights of the plot. File includes letter from Lieutenant General Quin John Freeman, Henry Singleton, and Robert Gregory, Board of Works office, Dublin, commissioners of Board of Works, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, 7 June 1823, enclosing copy of report of Richard Martin, solicitor to Board of Works, concerning arrangements for the government purchase of the land in question, and in particular, his investigation of James Rooney's legal title in the land. Martin recommends a suspension of the planned purchase, on the grounds that Rooney, 'has not made out a clear and satisfactory Title to said Plot…', 5 June 1823. Martin encloses copies of 2 legal opinions of Serjeant Torrens KC, counsel to the Board of Works, 23 April; 29 May 1823. File also includes letter from Major James Palmer, 1 Fitzwilliam Square, Dublin, joint inspector general of Irish prisons, to Thomas Taylor, clerk, Chief Secretary's Office, Dublin Castle, 23 December 1823, enclosing letter received from Rooney, 52 Bridgefoot Street, Dublin, detailing his terms for the sale of his interest in the plot of land, 23 December 1823. File also includes letter from commissioners of Board of Works, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, 25 August 1823, enclosing a further report from Martin, concerning the investigation of Rooney's lease of the land from John Bonham, 22 August 1823, and, in turn, enclosing the legal case prepared by Martin respecting Rooney's title to the land, annexed with the opinion of Walter Hussey Griffith KC, counsel to the Ordnance and Barrack Board, 8 South Frederick Street, Dublin, 14 August 1823. The commissioners advise that, 'it appears that Mr Rooney is now enabled to make a proper and legal assignment of his interest in the premises..'.

Letter from Dr Edward Trevor, Cork, concerning arrangements relating to transportation of convicts

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Dr Edward Trevor, Cove [Cobh], County Cork, superintendent and medical inspector of convicts, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, emphasising the 'good effects' of the prompt transportation of convicts following conviction and referring to arrangements for the shipping of northern convicts from Dunleary [Dún Laoghaire], County Dublin. Trevor also urges that only those prisoners definitely destined for transportation, be admitted onto the convict hulk [depot ship 'Surprize'] at Cork; and refers to arrangements for the embarkation of those wives and children of convicts, permitted to travel to New South Wales. Trevor returns a copy of a letter from George R Dawson, Whitehall, London, under secretary of state for Home Department, to Gregory 11 July 1822, enclosing a copy of a letter from Sir Robert Seppings, RG Middleton, and James Bowen, commissioners of the Navy, to Henry Hobhouse, Home Department, expressing their opinion on the proposed arrangements for the embarkation of convicts for transportation to New South Wales, in particular the embarkation of northern convicts at Dunleary [July 1822].
