Details the assistance given by he and his brother Dennis McCormick, in securing the prosecution of 2 of those responsible. SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from anonymous writer styled 'I am that I am', and addressed to Henry 'G-old-burn' [Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle], and entitled 'Awful and Momentous'. Refers to 'an official Epistle addressed to the Secretary of State for the Home Department', referring to Goulburn and the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, 'conducting the Iris [sic] and Emerald Government….'. Also further letter from 'I am that I am', to [Goulburn], and entitled 'Righteous and authoritative', expressing annoyance at the response of the Chief Secretary's Office, to the writer's complaints regarding the conduct of the King's County [County Offaly], police. He maintains that the conduct of the police was 'highly unconstitutional, corrupt, and arbitrary'; and also refers to his complaints about the conduct of the 'Arm-strong - the Bar-rack- master - of 'At-lone', and later referring to him as 'that Tyrant Strong-Arm'. Concludes warning that, '...if you call disapproving of the conduct of that Government, wrong, when I know that its conduct has been wrong - "threatening it" - I now threaten it'.

Letter from George Washington Busteed, Cavan, County Cavan, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, warning of the 'the probable distress which the peasantry of this Country are likely to suffer in the Spring of the ensuing year from the severity of the present Season, unless precautionary measures are speedily resorted to…'. Refers to his recent travels around the counties of Cavan, Monaghan, Armagh, Tyrone, Derry, Donegal, and Fermanagh, and reports on the situation of supplies of turf and of corn and potato crops; warns of likelihood of famine, 12 August 1823. Emphasises the importance of completion of the navigation, both in creating work for the unemployed poor, and in improving trade in Limerick and Dublin. Petition of Bridget Donnelly, alias Gilhuly, widow, Grange, Strokestown, County Roscommon, and formerly of Doon, County Roscommon, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, complaining of the conduct of her landlord, Joshua Cooper of Doon. Details her eviction from her home, and the sale of her possessions by public auction, when she was absent from the property. Also complains of conduct of local magistrate, James Hogg; requests government interference, 29 June 1823. Also letter from Major John Wills, Roscommon, County Roscommon, chief police magistrate for the county, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, reporting, as requested, on his investigation of the petition's claims. Wills reports that, contrary to her statement, she, '….quitted her House and her relatives came to the Premises and removed the furniture to evade payment of rent…', 20 July 1823.
