Letter from John Reily, Fairview Avenue, Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, 12 May 1823, enclosing a copy of Reilly's letter to Goulburn, 5 May 1823, requesting appointment to vacant post of governor of Richmond General Penitentiary, or governor of House of Industry, Dublin. Also letter from Reily to Charles Oldfield Bowles, private secretary to Goulburn, requesting appointment to post of supervisor of works at the paving board, Dublin. Reily refers to suggestions previously submitted by him in relation to the post, and in particular, concerning the case of Sir Charles Coote, who formerly held the post, 24 October 1823; Reilly also encloses copy of letter from Major Alexander Taylor, a commissioner of paving, to Reily, in praise of Reily's conduct in his post at the paving board, 20 November 1820, in support of his application.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Dr Edward Trevor, Dublin, superintendent and medical inspector of convicts, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, 2 August 1823, enclosing letter from Samuel Hollingsworth, superintendent of the convict hulk 'Surprize' at Cobh, Cork, to Trevor, reporting the resignation of the Roman Catholic chaplain recently appointed to the ship, on the grounds that 'the Convicts on Board are such a desperate set that to go on among them as Chaplain is more than he could undertake'. Also refers to possible plans for a rising among the convicts onboard. With subsequent pencil annotations on reverse of Trevor's letter, by Gregory, and by Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Petition of John Kelly, Clara, King's County [County Offaly], to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, concerning a green wax process and fine issued against him for his failure to appear as a witness in the prosecution of Timothy Rabbit. Kelly states that his absence was due to ill health and requests to be released from payment of the fine. An affidavit by Kelly is annexed to the petition, emphasising the truth of his claim, sworn before Edward Cox, magistrate, 1 August 1823. Also further petition of Kelly, to Wellesley, renewing his request, and noting that the fine is larger than he had first realised, 7 August 1823. Petition of Patrick Leahy, Clonmel, County Tipperary, civil engineer, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning his involvement in several public surveys as an assistant to Thomas Townshend, engineer to the commissioners for draining and improving bogs. Emphasises that he never received the reward which was promised to him for the standard of his work, noting in particular that of his survey of Lough Neagh, 'executed Trigonometrically' with particular accuracy, and to his technical inventions. Includes letter from Robert Leslie junior, Tarbert House, Tarbert, County Kerry, magistrate, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, 19 May 1823, requesting that government settle the enclosed accounts, as 'The Persons that this money is due too [sic], are calling on me daily for payment': enclosed is account of George Ware, seeking payment for food and lodgings provided for Carr, and the account of John Smith, seeking payment for same provided to Houlahan, both dated 17 May 1823. File also includes letter from Mathew Barrington, Dublin, crown solicitor for Munster circuit, to Gregory, responding, as requested, on Leslie's application for payment, 6 June 1823. File also includes letter from Barrington, Limerick, to Gregory, reporting, as requested, on claims made in a petition from James McCormick [petition not present], that Houlahan 'who had given Evidence on the part of the Crown in the County of Kerry was in the habit of transmitting unfounded statements to Government and was not deserving of any further remuneration', 28 July 1823.
