States that 'my language had no such tendency - it could not possibly have been so construed'. With subsequent pencil annotations on reverse of letter by Gregory, and by Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, querying the letter's meaning and its left handed writing. SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Patrick O'Connor, Roscommon, County Roscommon, tobacco manufacturer, to [Chief Secretary's Office, Dublin Castle], complaining of a fine of £60 levied against him 'for not having bills of papers affixed to each of twelve parcels of Tobacco', detailing their individual weights, despite being told by a local inspector of Athlone district, that separate labels were not necessary. Emphasises that there was no intent to defraud the revenue, and details his efforts to appeal to the board of excise; requests government interference, 31 July 1823. Also note from John Noble Talbot, clerk in excise office, Dublin, to Edward Hardman, secretary to the commissioners of excise, reporting the recommendation of the board of excise that the fine be reduced to £10, 4 August 1823.

Letter from Bartholomew Sullivan, Cook Street, Dublin, paper maker, to Chief Secretary's Office, Dublin Castle, concerning a combination among the workers at Sullivan's paper mills at Golden Bridge, and expressing concern at the power of such combinations in recent times. Requests some military protection for his premises, as he believes that they are planning an imminent attack; refers to a new engine purchased by Sullivan from England, for paper manufacture, noting that 2 similar engines, purchased by a Cork manufacturer, were recently 'entirely destroyed' by combinations.

Letter from police magistrates, Dublin, concerning murder committed by combination of sawyers of Dublin city

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Alderman Frederick Darley, John C Graves, and Major Henry Charles Sirr, police magistrates, head office of police, Dublin, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, 2 August 1823, concerning arrangements for a reward for a recent outrage; encloses copy of letter from George Studdert, police magistrate of 2nd Dublin police division, to head police office, detailing a violent attack at Walter Doolan's timber yard [also spelt Doolin] on Bachelor's Walk, by the combination of sawyers in Dublin city, 'for the purpose of compelling two men in Doolan's employment to join their body', and resulting in the death of one of the men. Also notes that the combination are determined to thwart any subsequent murder trial, and have also threatened the lives of Doolan and his son, 31 July 1823. Also encloses copies of the 2 affidavits sworn before Studdert and accompanying his original report: one from Doolin, 64 Marlborough Street, Dublin, detailing the circumstances of the attack at his yard; and one from James Cahill, 42 Mabbot [Corporation] Street, a sawyer employed by Doolin, stating that he was targeted for being a 'colt' [not part of a trade combination], both dated 24 July 1823.
