Renews former request for government employment, and encloses letter from Robert Peel, Chief Secretary for Ireland [between 1812 and 1818], Dublin Castle, to Cuthbert, stating that his name had been added to government list for employment as a gauger, 28 August 1817.

Petition of John Elliott, formerly of 89th regiment of foot, and James Finlan, formerly of 71st regiment of foot, both out pensioners of Royal Hospital Chelsea, confined in Wicklow jail, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, concerning their imprisonment for a 'small sum' of debt, and emphasising that they have no means to pay it and secure their release; also emphasises the distress of their families. Requests government assistance. Annotation indicates petition received [20 July 1823]. SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from James Myles, Rutland Street, Limerick, County Limerick, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, enclosing petition of the overseers of foundlings in Limerick city, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, complaining of the charge of £5 imposed by the governors of the Foundling Hospital in Dublin, to admit an abandoned child to its care. Emphasises difficulties caused to the overseers in Limerick, who cannot raise the sums required. Requests that government order the hospital governors to receive foundlings from Limerick free of admission, as was previously the practice, 23 July 1823. With subsequent annotation on reverse, of opinion of John Sealy Townsend, KC and legal advisor to Chief Secretary's Office, Dublin Castle, 1 August 1823.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

File of papers relating to case of Ephraim and William Servantes detailing the circumstances of the family's hardships, following their paying £3,000 to purchase the patent for the office of marshal to the Four Courts Marshalsea, Dublin, from William Dexter, but which revised patent was never drawn up. Includes letter from Ephraim Servantes, Bruges, Brussels, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, 26 May 1823, renewing his request for 'justice', and enclosing a copy of the former petition of Servantes and his son, 12 Rue de Dames Anglaises, Bruges, to King George IV, describing in detail, the circumstances of their case, and the 'unmerited severity' with which they were treated in 1788. Relates their dealings with the late William Dexter, and complains of the conduct of George Nugent-Temple-Grenville, 1st marquis of Buckinghamshire, former Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, for approving, but subsequently refusing, their purchase of the patent. Emphasises their loss of the £3,000 paid out, and their subsequent financial ruin, forcing them to seek a livelihood abroad, originally dated August 1821. File also includes letter from E Servantes, Bruges, to Gregory, acknowledging receipt of Gregory's letter of reply, and complaining, that a more Vague reply, to our just claim & the wrongs we have suffered in consequence, could not be furnished', 13 September 1823.
