SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Samuel Hollingsworth, Cove [Cobh], County Cork, inspector of convict hulk 'Surprize', to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, enclosing an information conveyed to him privately by McGee, one of the convicts onboard, concerning the activities of the Ribbonmen in the north of Ireland [information not present]. Notes that McGee has incurred the animosity of other convicts and is in danger. Also refers to the 'mischievous & turbulent' conduct of the Whiteboys onboard and the necessity of increasing the ship's guard, 9 Jul 1823. With subsequent pencil annotations on reverse, by Gregory and by Henry Joy, Solicitor General.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Sir Edward Smith Lees, General Post Office, Dublin, secretary to Post Masters General, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning problems with the Bank of Ireland's refusal to accept large quantities of new English silver coinage, and urging government intervention, 24 July 1823. Encloses copy of letter from Graves Chamney Swan, treasurer of Irish Post Office, to Lees, reporting the bank's cap on the amount of new coinage accepted in any one lodgement. Emphasises the difficulties created for the Post Office, as most of the revenue of their letter carriers is in silver, 16 July 1823. Also encloses copy of letter from Thomas Williams, secretary to the Bank of Ireland, to Lees, reporting the director's refusal to alter their policy, 23 July 1823. Also draft copy of letter of reply from Gregory to Lees, July 1823.

Petition of proprietors of County Cork, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, complaining of inadequacy of location of new corn market in Cork city, and noting the government's refusal to fund the construction of a bridge in order to allow the use of the preferred site. Urges government to reconsider the matter, emphasising the importance of a proper corn market to the agricultural interests of the county. Petition signed by 48 individuals, including William HM Hodder, governor of County Cork, and Lords Bandon, Bantry, and Carbery.

Letter from Edward Synge Cooper, Markree Castle, County Sligo, MP for County Sligo, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, expressing concern that very few public works schemes under Alexander Nimmo's supervision in County Sligo, have been executed, despite the necessary funds being in place; emphasises the 'deplorable' state of the peasantry from want of employment, 18 July 1823; with subsequent annotation on reverse of letter, by Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, stating 'Let Mr Nimmo be called on to answer this charge; I have long thought he ought to be removed' [21 July 1823]. Also letter from Nimmo, Galway, County Galway, to Gregory, responding as requested to Cooper's letter, 5 August 1823, and detailing the state of progress of each of the county's public works, including Raughly [Raughley] harbour and several lines of road.

Letter from George Vesey, County Dublin, concerning spirits licence improperly granted to Arthur McNally

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from George Vesey, Lucan House, County Dublin, magistrate, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, complaining at the issuing of a licence to sell spirits to Arthur McNally, whose application had been previously turned down by County Wexford's magistrates and church wardens, and also by the county's clerk of the peace, 'for very sufficient reasons'. Vesey complains that his certificate for a licence was eventually signed by John Allen and Molesworth Greene, town clerks for Dublin city, and by the police magistrates at the head office of police. Urges government intervention, noting that the licence was 'improperly obtained', 4 July 1823. Also letter from Frederick Darley, John C Graves, and Major Henry Charles Sirr, police magistrates, head office of police, Dublin, to Gregory, responding, as requested, concerning the issuing of the licence to McNally, 'without previous communication with the local magistracy', 1 August 1823.
