File contains several lengthy letters from McLoghlin reporting on his health and other assorted matters, including his allegations against a clergyman named O'Leary. Includes letter from McLoghlin to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, detailing various complaints he has suffered with his knees and attributing this and other sufferings to Mr O'Leary, 29 May 1823; also letter from McLoghlin to Wellesley, referring to O'Leary, whose 'conduct for many years was a course of cruelty, treachery, and injustice', 3 June 1823; with subsequent pencil annotation on reverse of letter, by William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, stating that he supposes McLoghlin to be 'deranged'. Petition of coopers of County Clare, at Ennis, County Clare, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, detailing their distress. States that, in pursuance of a notice issued by John Verker, the weighmaster of Limerick, concerning new legislation respecting the manufacture of butter casks, they purchased 'Considerable quantities' of timber. Petition states, however, that a subsequent resolution by Limerick Chamber of Commerce has decreed that only butter casks made out of oak and specifically made in Limerick will be accepted. The petitioners complain at the unfair monopoly thus created for the Limerick coopers, and predict their own financial ruin. Urges government to order the resolution to be rescinded, 12 July 1823. Encloses copy of printed notice issued by Vereker at Limerick, 26 May 1823, stating that according to new legislation, only butter casks made from oak, ash, sycamore, or beech will be permitted. |
