SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Copy of letter from Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Irish Office, London, to George Harrison, Treasury Chambers, London, assistant secretary to the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury, concerning the case of the Dublin merchants 'interested in the recovery of the fees which it is now discovered have been illegally paid to the craner and wharfinger of that Port since the year 1809'. Encloses a letter from the merchants [sent with the original], offering to settle for a sum of £10,000. Goulburn advises that if a speedy settlement can be reached, they may accept a smaller sum; also advises on the matter of compensation for Lord Henry Seymour [Conway], patentee craner and wharfinger. Requests the opinion of the Lords Commissioners, 30 May 1822. Also letter from Harrison to Goulburn, in reply, reporting the Lords Commissioners'' approval of Goulburn's plan, 11 June 1822. Letter from Samuel Penrose, Rosemount, Ballincollig, County Cork, a magistrate for County Cork, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, 15 June 1822, enclosing petition of the trustees of the turnpike road between Cork city and Tralee, County Kerry, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, stating that the funds of the road are inadequate to pay for the improvements necessary to it; requests £5,000 from the consolidated fund, for public works to employ the local poor to carry out various improvements to the road. Petition signed by 11 trustees, including Penrose [15 June 1822]. Also statement of the income and expenditure of the trustees of the road, 1 August 1822, with annotation by Richard Griffith, civil engineer overseeing public works. Also estimate of expenses for each improvement required to the road, including the lowering of hills and rebuilding of bridges [August 1822]. |
