Letter from Reverend John Emanuel, concerning dilapidated state of catholic chapel, Kanturk

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Reverend John Emanuel Orpen, Glebe Hill, Kanturk, County Cork, Church of Ireland rector of Kanturk and a magistrate of County Cork, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, reporting on the improved state of his neighbourhood, and the condition of the peasantry. Also comments on the problems arising from the lack of a bridewell or sessions house in Kanturk, for the use of magistrates of the barony of Duhallow. Notes that in recent times, the magistrates have met in the Roman Catholic chapel in Kanturk, itself in a state of dilapidation. Requests financial assistance from government towards repairing the chapel, and emphasising the 'efficient services performed by some of the R.C. Priests in their chapels during the late disturbances', 5 August 1822. Also resolution of magistrates assembled at Kanturk, on 7 August 1822, emphasising the necessity of a sessions house and bridewell for the town; signed by 14 magistrates, including Orpen and Hayes St Leger, 3rd viscount Doneraile.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from James Crosbie, Ballyheige Castle, County Kerry, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, 19 May 1822, enclosing petition of the county's central relief committee, detailing the county's distress and problems including absentee landlords, agricultural depression, and a lack of harbours, thus rendering it, 'subservient to the Provincial Cities of Cork and Limerick' for a Market'. Requests government aid to employ the local poor in works to erect a pier at Tralee; improve Dingle harbour; improve the navigation of the River Maine; and to erect piers at Tarbert and Kenmare. Petition signed by Crosbie, chairman of the central relief committee for County Kerry [19 May 1822]. Also petition of the committee for poor relief in Dingle, County Kerry, to Wellesley, emphasising the distress prevalent in Dingle town and the surrounding area: 'upwards of two Thousand Familys [sic] are at this moment in a state of absolute starvation…'. Suggests utility of a public works scheme to construct a pier in Dingle harbour, to employ the poor, and to improve the town's commerce and fisheries. Refers to a previous report by Alexander Nimmo, civil engineer, concerning the bay of Castlemaine, and requests government funds to employ the local poor to carry out the improvements required. Letter from Robert Day, Merrion Square, Dublin, judge, to Chief Secretary's Office, Dublin Castle, supporting the claims of Mr Luony, parish priest of Killorglin, County Kerry, concerning the distress of the local population, and emphasising the utility of building a new road to provide employment to the 'great mass of starving & unoccupied Labourers…'. Day emphasises that Luony's 'facts are unquestionable. The misery has been appalling..', and concurs with plans for a new road, but details some alterations to Luony's proposed route.
