SCOPE & CONTENT:

File of papers concerning construction of a barrier wall against the sea, on the road between Dublin and Howth, County Dublin. Includes letter from Sir Edward Smith Lees, General Post Office, Dublin, secretary to the Irish Post Masters General, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, 24 July 1822, enclosing copy of petition of the trustees of the turnpike roads leading from the city of Dublin over Ballybough and Annesley bridges, to the Post Masters General, concerning the encroachment of the sea on the road between Dublin and the Howth mail packet station, and recommending the construction of a barrier or wall along the verge of the road; petition originally signed by William Wilkins, secretary to the trustees, 100 Abbey Street, Dublin, 23 May 1822. Letter from George King, 3rd earl of Kingston, Myros [Myross] Wood, County Cork, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning the state of the parishes of Myros, Kilmacabea, and Kilfaughnabeg. Notes that whilst large quantities of potatoes have been planted in the area, '…the only danger is their digging them too early & that they will do if we do not subsist them till August'. Requests to avail of government's assistance for public works, offering to pledge half the cost of a constructing a bridge needed over a new road in the area, if government contribute the remainder.

Petition of the magistrates and gentleman of Dunmanway, County Cork, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting to avail of government's grants for public works, for the construction of a bridge over the Cahan [Caha] river, on the line of road leading from Dunmanway to Incheegeela [Inchigeela], County Cork. Details the benefits of such a bridge, including improved communications with the mountains to the north of Dunmanway, especially in the winter months. Petition signed by 12 individuals, 9 August 1822. Encloses a map, plan and estimate for the proposed work: details cost of the work, and includes a map of the area, marking the location of the proposed bridge, and also an elevation drawing of the bridge, both in black ink with colour washes.

Includes letter from James Allin, Fermoy, County Cork, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, 15 June 1822, enclosing petition of the committee for relieving the distressed poor of Fermoy and its vicinity, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, emphasising the want of employment in the district. Proposes construction of canals in the area; one from the Duke of Devonshire's canal at Lismore, County Waterford, to Fermoy; and one from Fermoy to Mallow and Kanturk, County Cork. Details the anticipated benefits for communication and commerce. [15 June 1822]; petition signed by Allin, the committee's chairman.
