SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Report of the General Board of Health, Dublin, concerning the state of health of inhabitants of certain parts of the south and west of Ireland, addressed to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle. Information presented in the report is collated from various reports received from resident physicians in the south and west of the country, 'where distress amongst the lower class of people is reported to be most urgent'. Information is presented in tabular form, detailing the name and locality of each physician or surgeon, the state of disease in that area, its causes, and other 'general remarks and means of relief proposed', and is arranged by county: Tipperary, Waterford, Cork, Limerick, Clare, Galway, Sligo, Roscommon, and Westmeath. Report also includes a statement by the Board of Health, noting that, '...there is much reason to apprehend that Epidemic Fever will show itself in those districts which are now suffering from the want of wholesome food and employment for the poor class'; signed by Dr Francis Barker, 25 May 1822. |

File of papers relating to government investigation of charges made against conduct of Samuel Hollingsworth, governor of Richmond General Penitentiary, Dublin. Includes report by John Sealy Townsend, KC, and James Palmer, joint inspector general of prisoners in Ireland, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, stating their opinion on each of the 8 charges preferred against Hollingsworth, by James Boyd, lately employed as a turnkey at the penitentiary. Charges include that prisoners were permitted to escape by his neglect; that he submitted false vouchers and receipts to the commissioners of accounts; and that provisions for the prisoners were fed to Hollingsworth's own pigs and poultry, 10 August 1822. Encloses minutes of evidence heard during their investigation of the charges, held 7-9 August 1822 at Richmond General Penitentiary. Also includes letter from Hollingsworth to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning his conduct, 14 August 1822. |
