Petition of Hector Mackay, Newinn [New Inn], Cashel, County Tipperary, police sub constable in barony of Middlethird, County Tipperary, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, concerning his dismissal from his post, for selling spirits on St. Patrick's Day, enticing a man to drink, and then arresting him. Refutes the allegations and requests reinstatement, 2 May 1822. Encloses his discharge papers from the Reay Fencible Highlander regiment in 1802, and his discharge papers from the 5th garrison battalion in 1814, both referring to his good conduct; also certificate from Richard Willcocks, chief police magistrate for County Tipperary, concerning Mackay's good conduct in the police establishment, 14 February 1820; and also a certificate from Major Arthur Mengus, vouching for Mackay's conduct in the reserve unit of the 42nd regiment of foot, 12 October 1820. |

Letter from John S Ferguson, Belfast, president of the Belfast Chamber of Commerce, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning an application to the Lords of the Treasury, London, from the Chamber of Commerce, in respect of the heavy burden of light dues payable by vessels trading from Ireland to London. Reports, however, that the dues remain unchanged and complains on behalf of the merchants of Belfast 'in being subjected to an annual charge of £141.6.9 on every vessel that trades regularly to London, more than is payable upon vessels trading thither from any port in Great Britain'. |

File of papers concerning the case of Private James Murphy, of the 2nd Queen's Royal regiment, held in Maryborough [Portlaoise] jail, Queen's County [County Laois]. Includes letter from Lieutenant Colonel Thomas S Sorell, Royal Hospital, Dublin, military secretary to Lieutenant General Sir Samuel Auchmuty, Commander of the Forces in Ireland, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, 6 February 1822, requesting information on the case of Murphy. Encloses copy of letter from John Macdonald, Horse Guards, London, deputy Adjutant General of the Forces, to the Adjutant General of Ireland, 1 February 1822, in turn enclosing copy of letter from Lieutenant Colonel John Jordan, Brighton, England, commanding the 2nd Queen's regiment, to the Adjutant General of the Forces, London, 24 January 1822, detailing Murphy's military history and attempts to abscond, and his being sent back from the West Indies, following his confessing to a murder; encloses a copy of a letter from Murphy, Maryborough jail, to Lieutenant Jackson of the 2nd Queen's Royal regiment, denying any involvement in the murder, 25 November 1821. Jordan comments that it is proof that '….his confession has been a fabrication to get away from the West Indies'. Requests that he be discontinued from the regiment's returns; also encloses copy of letter from Jordan to the Adjutant General, 30 January 1822, sending a description of Murphy. |
