SCOPE & CONTENT:

Petition of the principal inhabitants and resident landholders of barony of West Carbery, County Cork, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, emphasising the distress of the lower orders of the barony, and recommending the benefits of constructing a line of road between Skibbereen and Crookhaven, 'to avoid the present Hilly and nearly impracticable Road, where it is not possible to use wheel Carriages, to the great hindrance of all improvements in the agriculture of the Country'. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel Thomas S Sorell, Royal Hospital, Kilmainham, Dublin, military secretary to Sir Samuel Auchmuty, the Commander of the Forces in Ireland, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning a proposed scheme of public works in County Cork. Encloses copy extract of letter from Colonel Sir Hugh Gough, Buttevant barracks, County Cork, commander of 22nd (Cheshire) regiment, to Sorell, suggesting government funding for the repair of the road between Newmarket and Liscarroll, and between Freemount and Liscarroll, County Cork. Emphasises the military benefits, in opening up a remote part of the county, and in providing employment in the area, 30 June 1822. Also encloses extract of a memorandum from the Deputy Quarter Master General, in support of Gough's proposal, 3 July 1822.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from William Wrixon Becher, Ballygiblin, Mallow, County Cork, MP for Mallow town, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, 2 July 1822, enclosing copy of resolutions passed at a meeting of meeting of gentry and clergy of barony of Duhallow, County Cork, held at Kanturk, 1 July 1822, and chaired by Becher. Resolutions emphasise the benefits from improvements to the area's road infrastructure, noting that, 'the principal Degree of Distress is felt in the remote & uncultivated parts of the Barony, where also the Roads are in the worst state….these were also the principal seats of the late disturbances'. Requests funds from government to carry out the necessary improvements.
