Letter from William Dardis, Drogheda, County Louth, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, enclosing memorial to Earl Whitworth, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting a post of employment; claims to have remained a loyal subject during the 1798 Rebellion and that Drogheda Corporation bestowed upon him ‘Freedom of their body - the first and only instance of such a favour conferred on a person professing the Catholic religion’; also asserts that in the aftermath of the rebellion, he held a distillery business, worth £30,000, but ‘in consequence of his zealous and persevering loyally [sic] he incurred the hatred of the disaffected of all denominations by whom associations were entered into and oaths taken not to use any spirits made by Petitioner’; also includes application for situation to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle.
