States that intimidation is prevalent, rendering it difficult to obtain the necessary information to charge those involved.

Encloses copies of 3 notices posted in the neighbourhood, including one stating that, 'We the parliament of Ireland do hereby inform ye [sic], that any such person or persons as took the Oath of Allegiance to the Republick of England, or will take it, will suffer a most cruel Death', Limerick, 3 December 1821; also includes a notice from 'Captain Rock'.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from John Evans-Freke, 6th baron Carbery, Castle Freke, Rosscarbery, County Cork, to [Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary], Dublin Castle, 27 December 1821, enclosing petition of the magistrates of the southwest district of County Cork, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, following a meeting of magistrates and landowners of the area. Expresses their alarm at the 'rapid' spread of 'that abominable System of Plunder and Assassination' across parts of the country, and stating their fear that it is soon to introduced to their districts. Urges the renactment of the Insurrection Act to maintain law and order. Petition signed by 29 magistrates and landowners, [December 1821].

Letter from Major General Henry Green Barry, Ballyclough House, Fermoy, County Cork, magistrate and high sheriff of County Cork, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, reporting on outrages committed in area of Fermoy, and on a meeting of local magistrates, gentry and clergy convened by Barry to discuss the disturbances. Urges government to adopt strong measures, and states that the administering of oaths in the area has been widespread, November 1821. Encloses resolutions of meeting of nobility, magistrates, and gentry of baronies of Fermoy, Condons and Clongibbon, County Cork, held 17 November 1821, proposing measures to be adopted to quell disturbances. Signed by Barry and Lord Mountcashel. Also encloses petition of the nobility, magistrates and gentry of the area to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, urging that government bring back the recently repealed Insurrection Act legislation.
