Letter from Richard Bourne, Lynnbury, Mullingar, County Westmeath, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning the disturbed state of the neighbourhood of Enfield [Innfield], County Meath. Warns that the individuals responsible, 'have presumed upon the impunity with which their first acts of insubordination were treated'. Reports an attack on one of the employees of Bourne's mail coach business; and a threatening notice pinned to the gates of his coach yard in the town. Attributes the hostility to Ribbonism and states that he will have to give up his establishment at Enfield, unless the military or police are sent there, 4 October 1821. Encloses letter from John [?Fivey], Innfield, Bourne's agent at Innfield, to Bourne, detailing the recent attacks, 3 October 1821, and enclosing the threatening notice issued by 'Captain Fearnot', and posted on the gates [September 1821]. |
