Letter from anonymous writer styled 'A Loyal Magistrate & friend to the People', Buttevant, County Cork, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, 26 November 1821, enclosing newspaper cutting concerning a meeting of magistrates and gentlemen held at Buttevant, 22 November 1821, detailing the names of each person in attendance and the resolution passed, calling on government not to enforce the provisions of the Peace Preservation Act in the recently proclaimed baronies in County Cork. 'A Loyal Magistrate' warns government not to accede to these requests, but to, 'follow up the Proclamation by sending the Police down without delay'. Offers his own resolution, that a force be sent, 'as will enable us to recover those oppressive Rents, which have driven the Country to such a state of desperation'. Refers to the 'enormous' rack rents at which lands are let. |
