Letter from Lieutenant General Quin John Freeman, Sir Hugh Nugent and John Longfield, commissioners, Board of Works, Dublin, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, conveying evaluation of plans drawn for new gaol for the county and city of Londonderry; indicates that the architect considers the design proposals to be ‘well contrived and judiciously arranged’ but they contain a number of deficiencies including omission of written dimensions and other design anomalies, for example ’from the Section of the Chapel it is obvious, that persons sitting in the upper gallery cannot see the officiating Clergyman’; encloses copy letter from Francis Johnston, Architect's Office, Dublin Castle, outlining in detail flaws in proposed design which require particular adjustment and attention, before plans can receive approval. |
