Includes letter from Michael Murtagh, Sheriff’s Prison, Dublin, to Chief Secretary’s Office, Dublin Castle, requesting copy of the Irish Insolvency Act and to state ‘if we are not relieved things cannot remain as they are’, 4 August 1820; also includes letter from John O’Brien, Crow Street, Dublin, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, indicating disappointment at Lord Althorpe’s insolvency bill and pleading that ‘the Prisons of Dublin are full of honest industrious Persons of all Descriptions confined for Debts some of whom cannot exist in Prison or out of it on acc[oun]t of their scanty means’, 12 July 1820; also includes letter from ‘a Friend to Humanity’ to Grant urging that if the English Insolvency Act were extended to Ireland it would ‘produce the most beneficial Effects’ and to warn concerning the prisoner who is admitted as an insolvent debtor: ‘For altho he may go into prison an Honest man, if he Spends any time there it is impossible for him to come out any other than a rogue’, 10 July 1820; also includes memorial of prisoners confined for debt in the Four Courts Marshalsea, Dublin to Grant, appealing for introduction of bill in Parliament for relief of insolvent debtors, signed by 102 individuals, June 1820. |
