Includes letter from Dr Edward Trevor, Passage East, Waterford, County Waterford, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, indicating surprise that ‘the Convicts could have made so formidable an attack…the impression on my mind at present is that relaxation of duty on either side must have existed’; encloses copy letter from Francis Davies Murphy, keeper of convict depot, with full account of the prison break, during which a soldier and two convicts were killed, 14 August 1820; also includes letter from Reverend Alexander Kennedy, inspector of the convict depot at Cork, to Gregory, with full report of the incident of which he observes ‘From a careful personal investigation I cannot find any Blame or Negligence to attach to Mr Murphy whose conduct has been so highly exemplary as to merit my most unqualified approbation or to any person employed by him’, 12 August 1820. |
