Letter from Sir William Betham, Ulster King of Arms, Reeds Hotel, St Martins Lane, London, England, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, protesting at ‘confusion and disorder’ of the Public Records Office; observes that ‘The old Calendars have been stolen as well as some of the Records. This must naturally be expected to result from appointing needy and ignorant persons without responsibility to supersede the officer who alone is legally responsible’; suggests a reformed service and ‘winding up the business of the commission’. Includes proposals to discontinue the Record Commission with creation of a single Keeper of records, with specific responsibilities, supported by a staff of six clerks and two laborers, employed for an initial period of four to five years. Also includes letter from Sidney Streatfeild, Private Secretary to the Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, stating that he ‘stumbled’ across some information amongst the Chief Secretary’s papers that ‘may save trouble’ [not extant]. |
