Letter from John Cossart, secretary, Ballast Office, Dublin, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, on behalf of the Corporation for Preserving and Improving the Port of Dublin, referring to likely results of a parliamentary bill on available revenue, and outlining extent of financial commitments and proposed expenditure on projects under auspices of Ballast Office; encloses tabular account of ‘average annual sum arising from the Rates appropriated for Erecting and maintaining Lighthouses, Beacons and Seamarks on the Coast of Ireland for three years ending the 5th of January 1820’; also encloses schedule of ‘Works distinguishing each, for which the Corporation were engaged the 6th of January 1820, with the Amount of the Estimated Cost then unexpended on each’ indicating, for example, work on Poolbeg Lighthouse, Hook Tower, Howth Pier and River Shannon; also encloses schedule of ‘Works distinguishing each, for which the Corporation have in Contemplation as useful and expedient’ including, a lighthouse on Bray Head, County Kerry, a beacon on Maiden Rocks, County Antrim, and ‘A Light or some permanent Building to mark out a dangerous Half-tide Rock near the Great Saltee, County of Waterford and Entrance of St Georges Channel which will be one of the most difficult Works to execute and maintain’. |
