Letter from Mary Ann Barnes, Kilfinnane, County Limerick, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting appointment of husband, Lieutenant Barnes, to post of chief constable of police. Relates that her father, Francis Johnson, of Cork, is ‘well known thro[ugh] the medium of the Public Papers for his Gallant, Spirited and active Conduct during the Rebellion of 98’; remarks that as to her husband ‘no later than last night did he apprehend three of the most noted offenders in the Kingdom. They are from Liscarrall in the County Cork, and were in this neighbourhood for the space of ten days, when he got the information; he immediately proceeded to the place they were in which is five miles from this taking four of his men with him, and on breaking into the house found them up in the two chimneys where, tho[ugh] they were well armed, Mr Barnes made them prisoners’; document is signed by six supporters and includes the names of the three prisoners captured by Barnes. |
