File of papers relating to loading of convict ships with prisoners and supplies. Includes letter from Robert White and William Wood, sheriffs of Dublin city, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, enclosing list of male convicts placed on the brig 'Atlas', and the captain's receipt [none present]. Emphasises their efforts to avoid the frequent occurrence of the arrival of the convicts in an 'Inebriated' state. States that they spent all previous day and night at Newgate prison to ensure that the convicts had no access to alcohol, 6 April 1819. Also 3 receipts, signed by captains, for fresh provisions supplied to the convict ships 'Daphne', 'Mary', and 'Bencoolen' and numbers of convicts boarded onto each, 14 April 1819 - 30 May 1819.

Includes detailed report on Four Courts Marshalsea, Dublin County jail at Kilmainham, and Richmond General Penitentiary. Also report on Kilmainham relating specifically to convicts, under sentence of transportation. Reports include information on location of prison; interior and layout; cells; day rooms; prison infirmary facilities; jail officers; admission of prisoners; details on prisoners held; their crimes committed; clothing and bedding provision; prison visiting; education; religious and moral instruction; classification of prisoners; employment; punishment and reward schemes for prisoners; exercise; diet; and cleanliness of prison and prisoners. Also printed pamphlet entitled 'Queries on the State of Prisons and on the Penal Code', Dublin 1810, printed for B. Dugdale, 6 Dame Street, Dublin, by Wilkinson & Courtney printers, Wood Street, Dublin. Also printed pamphlet entitled 'Inquiries relative to Prison Discipline, published by the Society for the Improvement of Prison Discipline and for the Reformation of Juvenile Offenders', London, 1818, printed by Bensley & sons, Bolt Court, Fleet Street, London. Contains 175 questions relating to all aspects of prison and prisoner life. Also letter from Henry Comerford, convict, recently a prisoner in a Dublin jail, now onboard the ship 'Bencoolen', at Cobh, Cork, to Robert White, high sheriff of city of Dublin, requesting that he forward the enclosed letter to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary. Enclosed letter of Comerford, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, refers to prison abuses, and presents a detailed picture of the situation he witnessed as a prisoner in one particular Dublin prison, warning that 'it is too much the Interest of every Person connected with its management to keep you from the real state of things least [sic] they might lose their valuable Employments', April 1819.

Letter from Dr Edward Trevor, Cove [Cobh], County Cork, superintendent and medical inspector of convicts, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning varied state of clothing and health of the 310 convicts recently embarked on convict ships 'Bencoolan' [Bencoolen] and 'Mary'. Comments on the condition of convicts sent from Newgate, Dublin; Kilmainham, Dublin; and Cork city jail. Criticises in particular the 'filthy' state of prisoners from Cork city jail, and their drunken behaviour.
