Letter from anonymous writer, styled 'A Protestant' and a 'Man of Charitable feelings for the State of the distress'd Peasantry', Fermoy, County Cork, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, complaining of behaviour of clergymen of established church, who allegedly, misappropriated funds provided for alleviation of local poor on public works schemes: asserts that such men having received aid retain it and ‘instead of giving it the diseased starving Individuals they kept the Money in lieu of Arrears of Tithe due’; refers to ‘Townsend’, curate of Farahy, near Kildorrey, who ‘would do any thing for Money’. |
