SCOPE & CONTENT:

Petition of the parochial committee of Farrahy [Farahy] and Kildorrery, County Cork, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, detailing the advantages of construction of new line of road between Farahy bridge and Farahy mill, on the road from Doneraile to Kilfinnan, and requesting government funds for the work. Petition signed by 7 individuals including John Lawton, parish priest of Kildorrery, and Reverend Thomas Townsend, Church of Ireland rector, Farahy glebe. Encloses a map showing part of the proposed line of road from Doneraile to Kilfinnan, and detailing the areas involved. Farahy bridge and mill, and several properties and their owners on the route of the road, are identified on the map; area surveyed by John Sheehan, 26 July 1822.

File of papers relating to request of Reverend Thomas Townsend, Cork, to be moved to an alternative church living. Includes covering note from William Gregory to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, forwarding statements of recommendation on Townsend's behalf: these include a certificate from Thomas St Lawrence, Church of Ireland Bishop of Cork and Ross, in praise of Townsend's work and conduct, noting that his wife is '…afraid to remain' in the area, she and their young son having identified and prosecuted the Whiteboy perpetrators involved in an attack on their home, 16 July 1823, signed and sealed by Elrington; also a certificate from Charles Mongan Warburton, Church of Ireland Bishop of Cloyne, 24 July 1823. File also includes letter from Richard Hare, Viscount Ennismore, Ballymore, near Cove [Cobh], County Cork, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, expressing thanks for the appointment of Townsend to the church living of Mayo, 15 September 1823. Also includes letter from Townsend, at Tuthill's Hotel, Dawson Street, Dublin, to Goulburn, emphasising his wife's ongoing concerns about the family's security, and stating his reservations with the remoteness of Mayo; requests consideration for appointment to parish of St. Nicholas in Cork city, 18 September 1823. Also 2 further letters from Townsend, to Goulburn, concerning his position, 1 October; 8 November 1823.
