List of names and details of each of 172 male convicts on board the convict ship 'Minerva', sailing for New South Wales, Australia, 18 August 1819. Includes full name of each convict, age, date of assizes trial, crimes, and length of transportation sentence. Names arranged by county. Crimes include picking pockets, sheep and cow steeling, vagrancy, perjury, highway robbery, assault, and possession of forged bank notes. Includes statement of John Ball, ship's commander, certifying receipt of all convicts listed, and also receipt of various items of clothing for each convict. Also receipt of 'one hundred spelling books with religious extracts annexed thereto, and likewise Fifty Testaments'.

Petition of Mary Connolly, Castle Townsend, near Skibbereen, County Cork, widow, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, referring to the services of her late husband, Daniel Connolly, as an acting steward and able seaman onboard His Majesty's revenue cruisers 'Minerva' and 'Vandeleur', and his death from drowning, as a result of falling overboard from the 'Vandeleur', whilst in pursuit of a smuggler off the coast of Galway. Emphasises her family's distress, and requests a government pension. Petition certified by 7 individuals.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Petition of Mary Sullivan, widow, Castletownsend [Castletownshend], near Skibbereen, County Cork, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting advance of a pension to support herself and her ‘three helpless orphans’. Recalls her late husband, James Sullivan, served as boatman with the preventive water guard at Donaghadee, County Down, and while labouring there ‘he and the Boats crew were unfortunately drowned on the Copeland Island on the 7th of Feb[rua]ry last’; also mentions he worked as seaman on the revenue vessels ‘Minerva’ and ‘Kite’ for almost 19 years but failed to qualify for a pension, which requires 21 years service.
