Letter from Reverend Andrew George Malcolm, Newry, County Down, Presbyterian minister of Newry, and moderator of the Synod of Ulster, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, 16 April 1821, enclosing petition of Reverend James Templeton, recently ordained Presbyterian minister of Ballywalter, County Down, to Earl Talbot Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle [petition not present]. Also letter from Reverend George Hay, Londonderry, Presbyterian minister of Londonderry, and Synod of Ulster's regium donum agent, to Gregory, reporting on the background of Templeton's situation, and expressing his support for his claims. States that a Reverend Gibson who was about to be appointed to the Ballywalter congregation, was tried at the last Synod meeting for 'very gross immorality', but with a body of support from 'the lowest dregs of the People', was ordained to the post by a Seceding minister. States that he has since taken possession of the meeting house at Ballywalter, and that legal proceedings are about to be initiated by the Synod of Ulster to reclaim it, 19 April 1821. Letter from John Bridge, Aughnacloy, County Tyrone, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning the appointment of a regium donum agent for the Presbyterian Seceding Synod, and stating, '…how much the great majority of the Synod feel disappointed in your Selection of Mr Hutchinson as their Agent'. Urges that Grant call Hutchinson to answer various questions, 'as will satisfy you, that he understands anything about the regulations and procedure of the Body of Seceders..'.. Details various complaints against Hutchinson's conduct, including those concerning the origins of the small congregation of Seceders at Clare to which Hutchinson now belongs. Refers to Hutchinson's former minister, Mr Adams, 'a man of excellent character...', whose, '...only crime with which he ever was charged, was that of affixing his name to a Petition in favour of Catholic Emancipation'. Bridge refers to his own service as the Synod's commissioner, 'for seven years, in obtaining for them their last augmentation of Royal Bounty..'. Urges Grant to reconsider the appointment, and appoint him instead. |
