Petition of owners of fishing vessels, in north County Dublin, concerning tonnage bounty

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Petition of the owners of fishing vessels of Howth, Baldoyle, and Malahide, County Dublin, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, concerning the refusal of the fishery commissioners to grant the bounty to each of the vessels, following the fishermen's failure to realise that the means for obtaining the grant had changed. Emphasises numbers employed by each vessel, and states that without the bounty, they will be forced to sell their boats. Expresses hope that, 'the Ignorance of the Industrious man may not be held as a bar to his exertions…'. Petition states names of 16 fishermen, including the name of each of their boats. Signed by Joseph Richard, on behalf of the fishermen, and certified with signature and seal of William St Lawrence, 2nd earl of Howth and Richard Wogan Talbot, 2nd baron Talbot of Malahide, [March 1821]. Annotation by Chief Secretary's Office, indicates that petition was referred to commissioners of fisheries. Also letter from Henry Townsend, secretary to commissioners of Irish Fisheries, Irish Fisheries Office, Dublin, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, responding, as requested, to the petition, and stating reason for the refusal of the bounty, 4 April 1821.

Quinn requests government assistance, following his fishing boat being wrecked in September 1820, on its way from Dublin to Strangford, County Down.
