Letter from Thaddaeus Connellan, 3 Percy Street, London, England, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, requesting to have the Irish Bible forwarded to him and anticipating the positive effects for society. Observes that ignorance of spiritual matters together with drinking and card playing are endemic amongst the native Irish, but enthuses ‘that many of my scholars meet on Sundays and hold meetings with their Neighbours where the Tenets of popery are freely discussed with much sense and Judgment and a great quantity of the Scriptures is much sought for; known they are not in readiness yet the Committee of the Bible Society granted me 500 copies of the Gospel of St Matthew as soon as ready to give my scholars’. |
